Should I Text My Ex? Read the Cards First

A client messaged me at 1 a.m. last Wednesday. A song drifted up from downstairs—the one they used to share—and her thumb was already on his chat window.

She asked: should I text my ex?

I asked instead: are you trying to talk to him, or can you just not sit with the quiet?

Those aren't the same thing. Most late-night texts belong to the second one.

Three cards before you hit send

Where's the impulse from? Pull the Eight of Swords or The Devil and stop. That's attachment doing the pushing, not readiness. You're not communicating—you're crying for help.

Can he receive it? Watch for the Four of Pentacles (walled up) and Nine of Swords (already buried in his own stress). A gentle message can still land as one more weight.

What will it create? A real conversation, or another read-and-no-reply? This card is the most honest and the easiest to ignore.

Sometimes not sending is the move

If the spread is heavy on Swords, or the Hermit shows up—respect the distance. Knocking on a closed door gets you a cold face, and that hurts worse than the silence.

My 1 a.m. client pulled the Eight of Swords plus the Hermit. She laughed, finished her yogurt, went to sleep. Two weeks later she said not sending it was the best call she'd made all year—not because he came back, but because she learned she could hold herself back.

The rule: send it only if you can send it and still get through the day, whatever he says back. Until then, drafts.

Getting back together with an ex starts with one message. Make sure it's the right one, sent at the right time—a quick tarot reading for ex contact can save you the regret.
